On September 20th, Professor YU Miaojie, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Committee and President of Liaoning University addressed a speech of “to carry out Scientific Researches based on Chinese problems so as to Better Serve our Motherland” for the “first lesson of the new semester” for postgraduate students. He gave this unforgettable first lesson by sharing his learning and researching experiences with students. The lesson was presided over by Vice President YANG Song and was held online.
To comprehensively implement the educational guidelines formulated by the Party, practice the fundamental task of establishing moral integrity in cultivation and pursue education for all-round development, Liaoning University organized “Welcome to the New Journey of the 20th National Congress--the First Lesson of the New Semester” for students to embrace the new semester with forge ahead attitude.
In the class, Professor YU Miaojie had in-depth communication with postgraduate students in the aspect of the meaning of growing up, making study plan properly, choosing research projects and doing researches successfully.
Professor YU Miaojie pointed out, in order to become talents in the future, we must pay attention to the following aspects. First, have great ambition while sincerely concern about motherland. Vision will determine the height of your life, and ambition will determine your depths of thoughts. Only by opening up our eyes, grasping the direction, and being grateful of the times could we realize the value of our lives in big time. Second, be strict with ourselves. Self discipline is one’s best tutor. Only when we work seriously, prepare ourselves in advance, and refuse taking life as a game or living on imaginations could we maintain a good mind and achieve positive results. Third, have the spirit of perseverance. Successes are performed not by intelligence but by perseverance. On our way of pursuing knowledge, we must forge ahead bravely, be diligent, seize every minutes we have and cherish our days of learning together. Fourth, pay attention to psychological health. We need to maintain a good psychological health and avoid putting too much pressure on ourselves. We strive for progress of our times through the unremitting efforts, professional skills and knowledge. Fifth, willingly to be young students. Learning is a lifelong journey, we should keep a humble and curious heart towards knowledge, and become the person who are good at learning and enjoy learning.
Professor YU Miaojie expressed his expectations for students who just entered their postgraduate stages. He indicated that students should have a better understanding of the program cultivation, such as learning objectives and learning methods. By this way, students can make a scientific study plan and create opportunities for self development. In terms of selecting supervisor, research topics and clarifying research thinking and methods, Professor YU Miaojie took his own doctoral study experiences as an example, providing guidance and suggestions for students throughout their whole study process, from the stage of making study plan to doing research work.
For students already in their postgraduate studies, Professor YU Miaojie emphasized the following points on making good research. First, to figure out our own comparative advantages. We make research on Chinese problems while keep an eye on the world issues, establish logic links between them and choose proper research tools. At last, we are capable of doing research individually instead of depending on cooperative work with professors. Second, “walk on two legs”. Writing papers in both Chinese and English are necessary. We need to pay particular attention on writing English papers to improve language level so as to present compelling China stories on its reform and development. Third, make research localized, standardized and internationalized. We must carry out scientific researches based on Chinese problems in order to better serve our motherland. Fourth, attend high-standard academic conferences nationally. Self improvement will happen gradually in the preparation of the conferences. Fifth, take exercise and keep in good health. Thus we could devote all the efforts into study with a healthy body.
Over 3000 postgraduates attended the lesson online. Graduate School and person in charge of postgraduates management from schools providing postgraduate programs attended the lesson in meeting room 317 of the office building.
