Biography
Yu Miaojie, born in 1976, is a Fellow of the International Economic Association of the United Nations, a distinguished professor of the National Talent Program, and a recipient of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. He is a deputy to the 14th National People’s Congress, Member of the Standing Committee of Liaoning Provincial People’s Congress, a special inspector of the State Committee of Supervisory, Vice President of Liaoning Provincial Discipline Inspection and Supervision Association, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and President of Liaoning University. He is among the top 1% most highly cited economists in the field of economics and management in the world and is also at present the only Chinese scholar to win the Royal Economic Society Prize. He is one of the first-batch Changjiang Young Scholars (2015), an Outstanding Young Scientist of Beijing, a Boya Chair Professor at Peking University, a member of Economic and Trade Policy Advisory Committee of Ministry of Commerce, a council member of “China-US Research Think-Tank Alliance” of the Ministry of Finance, an Honorary Professor of Irkutsk State University in Russia, an expert member of International Advisory Council of Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, and holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California, Davis. He serves as the Vice President of China Society of World Economics, Vice President of the Chinese Association of Quantitative Economics, Vice President of China Society of Industrial Economics, Vice President of Chinese Association of Hong Kong & Macao Studies, a contact representative for NPC Financial and Economic Committee and Budget Work Committee, Vice Chairman of Liaoning Federation of Social Sciences, and a member of the Legislative Committee of Liaoning Provincial People’s Congress. He has been appointed as an expert advisor by the United Nations, Asian Development Bank, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Commerce, Counselors’ Office of the State Council, and various local governments. He was specially invited to the Headquarters of the United Nations to deliver a report on China’s economic development and enjoys special government allowances from the State Council.
Professor Yu Miaojie’s research areas include International Trade and Chinese Economic Development. He has published nearly 200 papers in top-tier domestic and international journals, including the Economic Journal, Review of Economics & Statistics, Journal of International Economics, Journal of Development Economics, as well as prominent Chinese journals such as Economic Research Journal (《经济研究》) and Journal of Management World (《管理世界》). He has authored and published 27 books, textbooks, and essays in Chinese, English, and German. He serves as the Associate Editor of the internationally renowned academic journal Review of International Economics, Honorary Editor of Ministry of Commerce’s journal International Trade, Editor-in-chief of Journal of Liaoning University, Editor-in-chief of Japan Studies, and Executive Editor of Journal of Chang’an University.
He has thrice been given the Excellent Achievement Award of Philosophy and Social Sciences by the Ministry of Education, received the Excellent Achievement Award of Philosophy and Social Sciences by Ministry of Education, the Zhang Peigang Development Economics Outstanding Achievement Award, and has been awarded the An Zijie International Trade Awards five times. His representative work, Processing Trade and Chinese Enterprise Productivity, has won several awards, including Liu Shibai Economics Award, Hu Sheng Young Academic Award, the National Trade Development Research Award, the China Young Economist Award, the Achievement Award of the Liaoning Provincial Philosophy and Social Sciences Award, and the Excellent Achievement Award in Philosophy and Social Sciences from Beijing.
At the 120th anniversary celebration of Peking University in 2018, Prof. Yu Miaojie was cordially received by General Secretary Xi Jinping as one of the representatives of outstanding young-and-middle-aged teachers at Peking University. He participated in a high-profile symposium hosted by then Premier Li Keqiang as an outstanding representative of the 25th anniversary of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. In 2024, he visited the Federal Assembly and regional Dumas of the Russian Federation as a member of the National People’s Congress Youth Delegation.
